Alappuzha backwaters

Alappuzha is a prominent backwater tourist destination in Kerala, attracting hundred thousands of foreign tourists each year. The intricate networks of canals flows their way through the vast paddy fields of Kuttanad. The canal network and the habitat surrounds it give Alappuzha with an alias as Venice of the East.

Kuttanadu is known as the rice bowl of Kerala with its vast paddy fields. Kuttanad is surrounded by enchanting backwaters. The backwaters is an essential part for the paddy fields as these waterways supply freshwater for irrigating the rice farms.

Alappuzha Nehru Trophy boat race at Punnamada backwaters is a major crowd puller. It is conducted on the second Saturday of August. Other boat races include pulinkunnu Rajiv Gandhi boat race (On the last Saturday of August) Champakulam Moolam boat race (July), Payipppad Jalotsavam (4th Onam day), Neerettupuram boat race (during Onam).
